Tinfos run-of-river plants provide clean energy to rural communities
- Published 22 March 2023; updated 21 September 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Marked available; listed under Energy / Hydropower.
- Tinfos develops turnkey run-of-river hydropower plants, which use a river’s natural flow without a reservoir. The company offers plants up to 50 MW and can handle permits/licences, project development, finance, power-purchase agreements, construction, commissioning and operations. Plants can be grid-connected or delivered for off-grid use and operated locally or remotely from Tinfos’ global operations centre, with maintenance support from its subsidiary Tinfos Vannkraftservice.
- The article says avoiding a reservoir reduces environmental/community impacts and can make projects easier and less costly to build and maintain than dam-based plants. It presents these systems as suitable for rural communities that rely on diesel or coal. Site-specific impacts and costs are not quantified.
- Tinfos, established in 1894, reports a portfolio in Norway and Indonesia, project development in the Western Balkans and expansion in Southeast Asia. The article states its developed Norwegian hydropower installations produce about 600 GWh and sets a goal of adding 1 TWh in annual global production by 2030.
