Ulmatec Pyro makes use of engine waste heat
- Published 5 August 2022; updated 21 September 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Marked available; listed under Maritime / Ship design and ship’s equipment and Services and support.
- Ulmatec Pyro’s Waste Energy Recovery System captures heat from engine exhaust and cooling water and transfers it into onboard hot-water heating. It balances recovered heat among HVAC, cabins/bathrooms, potable hot water, tanks, reverse-osmosis preheating, fresh-water generators and pool heating. Thermal storage can later heat a vessel while docked or operating in battery mode; surplus energy can also drive adsorption cooling or deck anti-icing.
- The company says as much as 40% of engine surplus energy can be reused for heating, reducing fuel-fired heater use and potentially lowering fuel use and emissions. The system regulates automatically across changing climate zones. The article provides no vessel-specific measured savings or emissions figures.
- The system is described for vessels with heat demand from 4 kW to 10,000 kW. Ulmatec says it has delivered systems worldwide to offshore vessels, icebreakers, rigs, exploration cruise ships, fishing vessels, research ships and ferries, including newbuilds and retrofits.
